Why this exists

The group briefing works. The next step is the individual.

Everyone hears the same thing — the toolbox talk, the weekly briefing, the standard everyone works to. It is the floor, and it holds. The next gain belongs to one person at one kerb, and it needs three things at once.
K
Known
Competence, experience and record — fairly, and in one place.
G
Guided
The right answer and the right check, at the moment the job needs it.
P
Protected
Good work made visible. Drift caught early, before it becomes an incident.
Safety gain
A briefing about someone else’s incident is the same message to everyone in the room. It is worth giving — but will it reach the one thing this worker is weakest at? Smart Safety adds that layer on top, and it needs all three of these at once. One of them alone changes nothing.
Smart Safety2 / 12
Safety gainNot a company average — a live score on their own work, and the record does not leave ALS. Good work puts points on. Drift takes them off.
Smart Safety3 / 12
Safety gainA classroom day covers what most of the room already knows. Two minutes on the exact gap puts the points back — and changes the next dig.

Point of works

The daily sheet, and the checks it arms itself.

The sheet
The one they already fill in, shorter.
The daily risk assessment, on their own phone, working with no signal and writing back to the office system afterwards.
The photographs
A control you claim is a control the photos show.
Answer Yes to barriers and it wants the barrier run in shot. No extra photographs, no extra steps — the checks read the ones already there.
The checks
Five, and only the armed ones run.
Signs and cones, barriers, excavation access, PPE, the permit. No ladder question on a job with no excavation — the crew’s own answers decide.
Safety gain
A form that asks forty questions about work nobody is doing gets tick-tick-ticked — and the two that mattered get ticked along with it. Asking only what the job actually involves is what makes the answers worth reading.
Smart Safety5 / 12
The photo check

It flags. The crew answer. A supervisor decides.

It never blocks
The sheet is in before the check runs.
It stores the moment they send it and the work carries on. If our side is down, the sheet still goes — and the record says so rather than calling it done.
The crew answer first
Put it right, or say why.
Correct and re-sign it, or send as-is — but as-is stays switched off until they give a reason. Their sentence leads the card the supervisor reads.
It will not guess
Only what a photograph can settle.
A calibration date too small to read, a storage rule, whether someone understood a briefing: never asked. The fix is not a better model — it is not asking.
Safety gain
A photograph read while the crew are still standing there is a barrier moved today rather than a finding in a report next month — and nothing is marked down without a person: the flag, the crew’s own words and the decision are kept together, so the next person to ask can see why the sheet went through.

Protected · the chain

A supervisor backs the operative. A director backs everyone.

1
Send it back

The finding is right. The crew corrects the work, or the sheet.

The crew fix it first
2
Reject it

The finding is wrong, and obviously so. It closes, and clears the deduction.

Backs the operative
3
Send it up

Contested, not obvious. It closes nothing and a director rules on it.

A director backs everyone
Safety gain
A safety system with no way to say “that is wrong” gets quietly ignored by the people it reports on. Building the challenge in is what makes the record trustworthy enough to act on.
Smart Safety7 / 12
Safety gainA worker who cannot get an answer guesses. This ends the guess, in seconds and at the point of work. And where there is no checked answer it says so, and says what to do next.
Smart Safety8 / 12
Safety gainThe dangerous assumption on site is that the drawing shows everything. Naming what the drawing does not show tells the crew exactly where they have to find out for themselves — and that gap is what people dig into.
Smart Safety9 / 12
Two more things

The gang, and the wall.

The gang
The right person on the right job.
A supervisor who cannot see who is thin on a competence cannot put the right person on the right job — and every line they read, the worker can already open on their own phone.
The wall
The record stays in ALS.
A workforce that believes their record will be used against them stops being honest. Only true data prevents anything.
Safety gain
One record, and two conditions on it. Open enough that nobody is being told about themselves second-hand, and closed enough that the truth is worth writing down.

The van brief

The brief, before you step off.

The brief, in its own words
Quick one before you step off. Not the pack — just what you need as you pull up. Live cable on the plans. Treat the ground as live. CAT and Genny before you dig. I will not give you a depth. If you don’t know, don’t guess. Weather that matters today: wind. If a board can walk, bag it. How are you feeling? Fit for this? If not, say so on the point of works.

Two minutes, in the product’s own voice, while the van is already moving: the job and the ground, today’s wind, what we know about this job, the kit to check, and who to ring if the supervisor is off. The point is a crew that arrives having heard it rather than having meant to read it.

It refuses what it cannot know. Asked how deep, it says so out loud rather than guessing. And it asks the crew how they are, because that answer belongs before the dig rather than after it. Looking sharp is the standard every morning — whether anyone is visiting or not.

Safety gainThe pack is read least on the mornings it matters most. A brief that plays while the van is already moving costs the crew nothing they were not spending anyway.
